LED LIGHTS: The Better Light
Camair July 10 20174
On February 19, the Vanderbilt University Commodores opened the baseball season in the Hawkins Field against the University of San Diego Toreros and played more night games in March against Northern Illinois University and Mississippi State University. Before June 24, 1927, night baseball games were rarer than green diamonds. Floodlights were then introduced to allow the scheduling of games beyond daylight hours in order to accommodate people, both players and audience, who were occupied throughout the day. This was a good idea for a few years but a new challenge came into view: lighting a stadium costs somewhere around $100 per night.
As humans are a race that always looks for the better option, the Commodores and Toreros played under Light Emitting Diode System. This new LED system uses a control system which enables vibrant viewer experience and increased operational flexibility. As you may already know, the lights used in Hawkins eliminates the
time it takes to “warm up” the traditional metal halide lighting, which allows for lower hours of operation. Not to mention, the new LED lamps slash energy use by as much as 75%. This warm up period uses so much energy where 90% is only given off as heat.
Another common issue with traditional light bulbs is trapped light. Reflectors are installed inside to bounce light away from the lamp. Traditional light bulbs trap 40% or more of the light they produce which causes the poor quality of lighting which creates a need for more lamps to make-up for the lost illumination.
LEDs are small and efficient solid bulbs that were first used in pen lights, instrument panels, and electronics. Nowadays, they are grouped in clusters with diffuser lenses. LED Lighting’s efficiency has impressed even environmentalists at treehugger.com as they have found that it has “an impressive 100 lumens-watt and are rated for 100,000 hours of operations with a 10 year warranty. Focused output from LEDs eliminate energy losses from trapped light. LED lighting companies also guarantee that this lighting system is easy to install, nearly maintenance-free, and lowers operating costs, residential and commercial alike.
In a time of where global warming and wasted energy are starting conversations, options to save energy and money are rapidly becoming one of science’s research objective. With a solution that gives your audience a better experience for the rest of the season and saves you on costs, LED lighting should be the MVP and you the winner.
